John started shearing fiber animals for other people when he was 12 yrs old.  Having been raised in a fiber loving, Shetland Sheep raising family, he is quite proficient at getting the fleece off in one piece, leaving very few second cuts, and having the animals look good when they are finished as well :-)... He started doing alpacas and llamas in 2003.  If you would like a certain look, or a specific show cut, be sure to let him know and he will do his best to accommodate you.

John shears Llamas and Alpacas for $30 a head, and he will trim their toenails at your request. If you have more than 30 animals at one location, he will do them for $25 a head. He prefers to lay them down and restrain them with ropes as this is safest for the animal as well as the shearer. He brings his own restraints and mats, as well as a helper, and prefers owners to have their own help bagging and sorting fleece as well as cleanup. If you or your vet would like to vaccinate or worm them while he's got them down, please be sure to let us know beforehand as this tends to slow down the process.
He does not use drugs, (on himself or the animals...;-))
as this puts all animals, especially the pregnant ones at risk.

Alpacas need to be dry...penned and accessible, when he comes out.

Bio security is a priority to us, as we raise livestock too. John disinfects all of his equipment between flocks and will come onto your property in clean boots with clean equipment. If you would prefer that he use your equipment, please let us know beforehand so he knows what he needs to bring or not bring...While we take precautions and use the gentlest and safest methods for shearing your animals, accidents can happen due to the nature of livestock handling. We cannot be held responsible for accidents.

John enjoys shearing, will do large groups of alpaca, and will travel, but we prefer to group you with others in your area, as our travel fee is $20 an hour in both directions....(this comes out to about .65 per mile one way) If he can do several flocks or herds in an area and the owners split the travel, you can really reduce the travel fee.  If you are local, (within 1/2 an hour's drive) and have a flock or herd of well loved and well taken care of animals, there is no travel fee..... we have references :-)
